About the project
A trilogy about early efforts to reform state social institutions and introduce new approaches to caring for children in Bulgaria. Through personal stories, the films explore institutional care, support within the family and the transition to independent life.
Themes of the trilogy
- Children with physical disabilities — life in an institution and care within the birth family.
- Early efforts to introduce foster care in Bulgaria as an alternative to institutional care.
- The lives of 80 girls at the residential correctional school in Podem and their experiences after leaving the institution.
Project context
A training trilogy for UNICEF Bulgaria. The films were used for training by Bulgaria’s State Agency for Child Protection.
